Home Buyer's Tips For Moving

By Tom Vanleen

Buying your first home can be exciting, but preparing to move can cause a lot of stress.

It consumes a lot of your time, because you are packing up all the contents of where you live now. It often surprises people how long takes to organize and prepare everything. Be sure to prepare everything for your move in advance. If you plan ahead and keep everything organized, you'll find that everything goes smoother. Don't lose important documents in the move; keep them all in an easily accessible place. Have your apartment or old home staged so that on moving day everything is ready to be loaded up. Everything is easier and you save time during your move if you prepare well.

Fill a single suitcase or backpack all the necessities a person would need for a 3-day vacation; do this for each person. Depending on your schedule, this includes 3 changes of clothes that you can unpack in or go to work in, plus toiletries, prescriptions, eyeglasses, and other vital items. Keep these items separated from the rest of the things packed and handy for when you arrive, so if anything else is missing, you will at least have the necessities handy.

For the things you want to have immediately available as soon as you arrive, have an "open me first" box for each room, clearly labeled in red instead of black ink. This might be soap, towels and toilet paper for the bathroom; for the kitchen it's the coffee maker and paper cups, plates and flatware; etc. This will make your first 24 hours in the new place much simpler.

One tip that home buyers can use when moving is that the less you move, the better off you're going to be. If you can, wait until you have moved before buying big items like appliances and furniture. When moving long distances, you will end up paying based on weight, which can get expensive. If you can avoid those big purchases until you are set up in your new home, you'll save a lot of money and trouble as you move. If it's been at least one year and you haven't used something, it's wise to lighten your load when moving by discarding it.

It's easy to collect items over time that you don't even need and they simply take up space. Donate them to charity, gift them, or have a garage sale. If you eliminate items you don't want or need, you'll save yourself a huge amount of work on moving day.

Find babysitters to help out with children to give you some time to pack. Also, find help on moving day to avoid tears as the children watch their beloved toy chest being moved out of the house, and keep them away from those moving heavy furniture, and so on. Board your pets for moving day if you can, since the doors will be open.

Moving is a challenge, in particular for first time home buyers. Keep these moving tips in mind and you'll find that moving day will go smoothly and you'll be settled in your new home in no time.
